Sacred Customs and Instruments

The mesmerizing dance of monks accompanied by soul-stirring music from sacred instruments, combined with the disciplined participation of monks, nuns, and locals, creates an ambiance at the shey festival that transcends mere ritual and spectacle. As we approach the 67th celebration of this ancient festival in Dolpa in 2024, the enduring traditions and spiritual connection foster a sense of profound fulfillment. The government’s support has also contributed to the flourishing of this indigenous festival, which holds immense value for the people of upper Dolpo.

This year’s inaugural ceremony promises to be a significant event that is expected to foster social unity and harmony. The festival pays tribute to Jikten Gonpo Rinchen Pel, the founder of the Ribo Dugdra sect of Buddhism and his devoted follower, the saint Duptop Singe Yise.
